Trendsetting... Or, Fad-setting? (Class Blogging #1)

Posted by Meghan at 1:43 PM 0 comments
I'm in an IMC class, which stands for Integrated Marketing Communication, and every few weeks we have to write a blog post based on a prompt. I think I might start posting them here!

Anyways, this week's prompt was 'Trends vs. Fads', meaning we had to write about both fads and trends we've participated in. So, here's my answer:

As someone who has been interested in fashion since freshman year of high school, I have gone through an outrageous number of fads. To try and find some to write about, I went digging through my Facebook profile (terrifying, I know) to try and dredge up something that wasn't entirely embarrassing to share. The only thing I could really find there was a slew of ridiculous graphic tees from Limited Too, circa 2006. I loved those shirts so badly, and though they were mass-produced monstrosities with glittery cartoons of monkeys, dogs, frogs, or cats on them, I had almost every single one the store made. It admittedly was not the height of my fashion sense, but it was what every girl at my junior high school wore. It really only lasted until junior high ended, and Limited Too fell out of business completely, which obviously put an end to those shirts that I'd saved up all of my allowance for. Justice replaced Limited Too soon afterwards, and little twelve-year old me couldn't find it in me to replace a store I once loved--and neither could the other girls in my junior high school.
Trends for me are a little more relevant, though I do cycle through quite a few of those as well. If you had asked me three or four years ago to wear a pair of plain, black leggings, I would have probably given you some choice words. I never was a fan of them in high school, thinking that they looked not-put-together and just not my style at all (I had just gotten my first job at Gap, mind you), so I ignored them and kept buying jeans and jeans and jeans. Almost as soon as I got to college, though, my perspective on fashion shifted quite a lot. I found it harder and harder to dress cute for classes at nine in the morning, and started resorting to gym shorts and a t-shirt or something similar. It wasn't until fall of freshman year that I realized I'd need something comfier and warmer to go to classes in, once the temperature dropped. And, thus, my love of leggings began. Now, I've got a slew of leggings in my sock drawer, in a multitude of colors. Like every other girl on campus, I'll break them out as soon as the temperature drops below 70 degrees, along with my flannel shirts and baggy sweatshirts. They've turned from a trend to a staple in my closet, which my roommates love to berate me for. Leggings are here to stay, people. At least for a few more years.

So, there's my answer! Let me know what fads + trends you've fallen victim to!

University Living Q & A!

Posted by Meghan at 4:00 PM 0 comments
I recently was chatting with one of my younger friends about university life, when I got to thinking--why not turn this into a kind of Q & A?

This particular post is mainly focused on housing and living with other people, but I may continue the series!

Let's begin!

-x-x-x-

Q: Dorms seem like a practical option because I wouldn’t have to clean around but with how many people (roughly) did you have to share a bathroom?

A: The dorm style I lived in was a suite, and I shared a bathroom with three other girls. There was another bathroom on the other side of the curtain, but we didn't go over there. It honestly wasn't a bad set-up for a first-year student, and as much as I complain about it now, it was really a good way to integrate myself into the university and meet people.

-

Q: That’s a nice sort of dorm then, since you had a suite and the bathroom wasn’t shared with that many people. That’s a really good and practical option.

A: Yeah, the bathroom was nice--but, even though maids came to clean, I still tried to vacuum in our common area every once in a while, and in my room, since they didn't do that--they really just cleaned the bathroom & took any of our trash. So, you'd still likely be vacuuming/sweeping, but it's not too time-consuming, & gets you into good habits for later in life as well!

-

Q: You’re helping me so much with all your insider tips and notes--thank you so much, Meg!

A: Haha, insider tips. I feel like this should totally be a thing. I should keep records of our conversations and make it into a book. INSIDER TIPS ON LIVING WITH PEOPLE, a guide by Meghan.

-

Q: INSIDER TIPS ON LIVING WITH PEOPLE is something everybody needs but they just haven’t realized it yet! You should totally consider making this into a guide and who knows, maybe you’ll get rich selling it! I know I find it really helpful.

A: I'm glad you do, love! It'd be really cool to be published! I don't know if I'd be rich, but who knows!

-

I know this one is a little short, but I promise, I have a few more that are much longer!

Keep an eye out for more--I'm editing the next part as we speak!

July Favorites!

Posted by Meghan at 3:22 PM 0 comments
I cannot believe it's August! Where did my summer go?
Anyways, I come bearing a whole slew of new favorites from July! I've been sort of all over the place this month again, so this isn't a really great list of things, but here we go!

-x-x-x-

First up are trapeze/triangle dresses!

Okay, you're probably thinking this looks like a tank. Well, it's not! It's a dress, and oh, god, I'm in love. Not only are they spectacularly comfortable, they're relatively easy to come by! This obsession started when I saw this dress over at Free People. I love the style and colors it comes in (the plum one is to die for!), and I'm hoping to snatch up a few long-sleeved ones before autumn hits! There are a few more here + here!

-x-

And, next up we've got LUSH's Shark Week soap!

I've never shopped at LUSH before, and there's a new store in the mall I work in. But, I saw this advertised during Shark Week in early July and couldn't pass it up! My roommate and I were in Charleston, SC at the time, so we ran down to that store and picked up the last one the store had! It smells amazing, by the way--lots of citrus-y smells (lime and lemon for certain), a bit of coconut, and the featured item: Arame seaweed. I promise, it smells like you're at the beach. I don't know how they did it, but my god, it's incredible! They're only selling it until August 16th, so if you'd like some, I'd act quickly! (If you're seeing this too late, LUSH's soap Sea Vegetable + bath bomb Big Blue both smell very similar!)

-x-

I've also been really digging 1940's-style music lately!

swing-dancing.

Actually, I'll be honest--I've been in love with everything to do with the 1940's lately! A big part of it is my curiosity as a History major, and my love for music. I really like this mix on 8tracks that takes recent pop-hits and makes them into vintage-sounding songs! I'd also really love to take a swing dancing class, but I'm waiting for the right partner to come along, I suppose. There are some great swing-dancing videos on YouTube, though--you should all give it a look!

-x-

Finally, I've been obsessed with Poshmark!

poshmark.

I've recently been in a need for some extra cash, and I thought it'd be a good idea to sell some of the things I don't wear a whole lot--or never, as it turns out! I have only about 20 items up thus far, but I plan to add more! If you'd like to see what I have in stock, click here! Most of it is Gap, Old Navy + J. Crew, and almost all are XS/S. Anyways, it's a great way to sell some clothing you aren't sure what to do with, or are looking to get rid of!

-x-x-x-

That was this month's favorites! See you next time! <3

June Favorites!

Posted by Meghan at 6:43 PM 0 comments
Sorry this one is a bit late, loves! I try to stay on the ball with these favorite posts, but I somehow was so sidetracked that I nearly missed this one!

Here we go!

-x-x-x-

First, we have a song! I've been obsessed with 'Stockholm Syndrome' by One Direction!

stockholm syndrome, album 'four'.

I usually don't like boyband-type music, but damn, they're good! I've actually liked their music for a year or so now, but I only recently downloaded this song! It's really catchy, and it actually plays at the store I work at all the time, so I finally downloaded it. If you haven't heard it, take a listen--it's perfect for your sunny, summer day playlists!

-x-

Next up is a beauty product!

Rimmel Volume Flash Eye Shadow Stick

I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I'm terrible with makeup. Absolutely terrible. Especially with anything around my eyes! So, I found these and figured I'd give them a try, and they're great! It's an eye shadow stick, so you just roll it over your eyes and bam! It simplifies everything, and I can just roll + go! Seriously, if you're looking for a quicker way to put on eye shadow, this is the way to go!

-x-

Next up is a book!

Now, I'm sure most of you won't run out and get this book--and that's totally fine! But, I figured I'd put it here, since I've been reading it nonstop since my dad bought it for me! I'm currently majoring in History, and the endgame for me is curating a museum--though, with this book, I kind of want to open my own museum! Any ideas of what I could open a museum for?

-x-

And, finally, I'll put a few movies here that I've loved!

very good girls (2014); starring dakota fanning and elizabeth olsen.

jurassic world (2015); starring chris pratt and bryce dallas howard.

chances are (1989); starring robert downey jr.

-x-x-x-

Hope you enjoyed my favorites this month!

Dress Like... Wanda and Pietro Maximoff!

Posted by Meghan at 6:13 AM 0 comments
So, I haven't spoken about it on this blog yet, but I have been recently obsessed with Avengers: Age of Ultron! I loved the first Avengers movie, and all of the movies leading up to both that one and the new one, so it was only natural that I saw it the night before it came out!
Well, we're introduced to two new characters in the midst of all the action--twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff.

Their aliases are Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and I honestly fell in love with them as soon as they stepped onto the screen! So, I felt it natural to set up a quick 'Dress Like' post to get looks similar to what they wear in the movie!

First, we'll address Wanda's wardrobe:

1. Red.

Now, this seems vague, I know, but she has multiple outfits in the movie, and each one (aside from the one above, of course) has a huge splash of red. These are a few options to get her chic and bohemian-type look.

2. Little Black Dress.

What says fighting evil robots like a LBD? Wanda certainly loves her black dresses, and though they're almost always plain black, there are a few that don a bit of a pattern! Here are some to get you thinking in the right direction.

3. Black Boots.

Wanda sure loves her black boots! Often she pairs them with tall socks, so a pair like these simple ones would be essential. The boots though are absolutely essential to her look, so it's important to get the right style! Here are some options:

4. Jewelry.

Wanda has very delicate rings and necklaces, but they're beautiful and simply add to her outfits. Here are some to get you started in the right direction.

So, there's Wanda's look! For a complete look at her outfit, I've compiled a little collage for you visual people:

And, on to Pietro, or better known as Quicksilver!

-x-x-x-

So, Pietro Maximoff is an interesting character. He's got super speed, so naturally, all of his clothing has to be able to handle all of the friction--making workout clothing the best option. So, I'll do his a bit differently.

1. A Cool Track Jacket.

Pietro only wears one jacket throughout the movie (technically 2, but I really liked his first one), and it's actually a jacket that's sold!

Now, on that Amazon link, the jackets are only available in men's size medium & double-XL, so this might not be the best option. But, there are other cool track jackets out there, like the few listed below:

Forever 21 seems to be the best option for a cool track jacket--but, I found some nice ones at Target as well! I'm sure as it gets a little cooler outside, these jackets will become more abundant!

2. Track Pants.

To make this look a little sleeker & girlier, I chose to find more running legging-type options! I think they still capture Quicksilver's, well, quickness!

Women's Multi-Color Ombre Insert Capri - RBXWomen's Multi-Color Ombre Insert Capri - RBX

3. Long-sleeve Top.

Pietro doesn't always wear a jacket--when he doesn't, he's often wearing a long-sleeve shirt that's tight-fitting and sleek. So, here are some lovely options!:

4. Running Shoes.

Now, of course, you'll need some nice new kicks for running! Adidas, the brand that created Pietro's on-screen kicks, created a line of running shoes that correspond with the Avengers--and they sell the exact ones Pietro wears! But, they come with a pretty price tag--$200.

But, if you don't want to drop $200 on a pair of running shoes, here are some alternatives:

Women's C9 Champion® Legend Running Shoes

Now, that's a pretty basic set of clothing--so, I thought I'd give you all some Quicksilver/Pietro-inspired pieces to use everyday, regardless if you're working out or not!

I hope you liked this 'Dress Like...' post, and I'll see you next time!

Summer Lookbook

Posted by Meghan at 11:30 AM 0 comments
I cannot believe it's nearly summertime again! This year has flown by so far, and for the most part, it's been a good year for me! I hope you can say the same!

Anyways, let's get started with another lookbook!

-x-x-x-

First up on the list of summer must-haves are a few graphic/patterned tanks.

Junior's Don't Be Basic Graphic Tank Ivory

Graphic tanks are making a huge comeback this summer (did they really ever leave?), and I know I've got a million in my closet already--anything from Iron Man to 'Clothes Before Bros'! They're so simple and easy, and with a pair of denim shorts, they're perfect for just lounging around and being lazy in the dog days of summer. The best part about them, though? You can get them in virtually any pattern and style out there! Since there are so many options, I've got a huge selection for you guys:

Target: here, here & here
Old Navy: here & here
Forever 21: here

-x-

Next, we've got a pair of denim shorts:

Obviously, denim shorts are always going to be in vogue during the summer time, but why not give your old denim shorts a run for their money with a pair like these from American Eagle? Yeah, $50 is a little pricey for a pair of shorts, but I promise, American Eagle makes great shorts. I bought two pairs on sale last year for about $50 (for both together), and they still look and feel brand new! I just think that a pair of short denim shorts that have a little pattern, or a different color (like these) makes them look so much better, and are totally worth the money. But, if you're on a tighter budget, the options here & here are just as good!

-x-

Also, along with denim shorts, a pair of lightweight shorts are a must!

Now, these come in a million patterns and fabrics, but I tend to opt for the silky-feeling ones. They're slightly comfier than denim shorts, and definitely have the ability to be dressed up or down. So, even if they are really short (like most of mine are!), they can still be classy and earn the all-clear from your parents, if they're a concern! Some more options: here, here & here!

-x-

Another great addition to the summer wardrobe is a kimono!

I have been absolutely obsessed with these lately, and I finally bought the one from Forever 21 up there! It's seriously so comfortable and can be used to protect your shoulders/arms from the sun, or to warm yourself up when nighttime rolls around! They can be dressed up or down, too, which is nice! There are some more options here, here, & here.

-x-

Another must is a swimsuit!

So, the obvious choice is a bikini, so that's what I've chosen to show here--but, no worries, loves! One-pieces are totally in, and designers are making some cute ones this season (like the ones here & here!). But, since I've always liked bikinis better, that'll be the focus of this. I usually grab one versatile bottom (like black, pictured above, or another plain color) and a bunch of tops that I can use with them. So, as a result, I have about five tops and two bottoms that I can kind of mix-and-match! Since swimsuits are such a major part of summer, I think I'll make a separate post going into the options.

-x-

And, finally, you need some cute sandals to finish off your summer look!

Women's Festival Beaded Ankle Strap Sandal

Again, this seems like an obvious one. But, hear me out--it's always good to revamp your old sandals! I've always avoided flip-flops when I can, but obviously, they're a requirement for the pool or the beach. Who says the flip-flops can't be something cuter, like sandals, when you go out? There are some great options here, here, & here as well!

-x-x-x-

I hope all of that was enough to get your summer wardrobe going!

May Favorites!

Posted by Meghan at 7:16 PM 0 comments
Hey everyone! May has been a crazy busy month--I've been all over the place this month, both physically and mentally! So, without further ado, let's see what I've been obsessed with this month!

-x-x-x-

First of all, Avengers: Age of Ultron!

avengers: age of ultron, in theaters now.

If there is one thing you all should know about me, it's that I am a fangirl, through and through. Obviously, you guys have seen my obsession with Once Upon a Time, and that still holds true with the Avengers/Marvel universe. I saw Avengers in 2012 when it came out just for fun, and I fell in love completely--so, now I'm hooked!
Anyways, this movie was incredible! Not quite as good as the first one, but it was still really, really good. I loved the introduction of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, or Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch! I was hesitant about them at first, but then I saw them and fell in love. There were great quippy lines, lots of action, and, of course, a heartbreaking twist. But, all in all, it was really quite good!
In fact, I've got an Avengers-related post in the works as we speak... It may or may not have to do with fashion ;)

-x-x-x-

Next up, we've got Nikes!

So, sad story--I've never had a pair of Nike tennis shoes before. I always just ran in Converse or some knock-off brand, and god, do I wish I'd just gotten a pair of Nikes in the first place! These are the cutest pairs I found, and holy moly, they're so lightweight! I think they might be amphibious-type shoes, since they take water pretty well (I accidentally tested this in the middle of a thunderstorm two weeks ago) and they don't have a tongue--I just kind of slip them on. But, I've been obsessed with them! I've worn them every day I can, and I can't get enough! And, honestly, $85 is not a lot of money for some great, well-made running shoes.

-x-x-x-

Of course, I've got to mention the Once Upon a Time finale!

emma swan in 4x21/4x22, operation mongoose.

HOLY WOW. I've never really liked season finales, since they mean my shows are over for the summer. But, oh my god, I've never been so excited for a finale in my life! I really loved the way the writers did this one--and, per OUAT tradition, it was two hours! Going back to the Enchanted Forest is always my favorite trope on this show, and this time did not fail! As you can see, Emma was in something not akin to her leather jacket!
All in all, it was so good, and definitely left off on a great cliffhanger that makes me want more!

-x-x-x-

And, finally, sunscreen.

Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Lotion Sunscreen SPF 30 - 8 oz

So, this one might be kind of weird. But, I just went to Charleston for Memorial Day weekend, and let me tell you--even if it's kind of chilly outside, please, please, please put sunscreen on. I got horribly burned on my chest and legs that weekend, and my god, it hurts still. My favorite sunscreen at the moment is Hawaiian Tropic. It's lightweight and yet a great sunscreen! I love that it helps you tan, too. Oh, and it smells amazing--I think coconut-y?
But, in all seriousness, please put on sunscreen if you're going to the beach or the pool, even if it's cloudy or cool. You can still get burned!

-x-x-x-

Well, thank you for joining me for my May favorites! I'll hopefully have some more things posted this summer, so stay tuned!
